A Short Guide to Compressing a File Before You Upload It

Running into an upload size limit doesn't always mean the file needs to be split up or sent a different way. Often, compressing it first solves the problem entirely.

For a Folder of Files

Zipping multiple files into a single archive usually shrinks the total size somewhat, and turns several files into one upload instead of juggling multiple links.

For Images

Photos straight from a modern camera or phone are often far larger than needed for sharing purposes. Most photo apps have an export or resize option that cuts file size dramatically with barely any visible quality loss.

For Video

Lowering the export resolution or bitrate slightly before uploading can make a meaningful size difference, particularly for anything that doesn't need to stay at its original quality.

Worth Checking First

Before compressing anything, it's worth checking the actual size limit, sometimes the file already fits and compression isn't even necessary.
